Well here's an interesting group. An acoustic-based trio with great pop songs and harmonies. These guys were going to Trenton State at the time of this recording, and they had just been signed to a label connected to the Feelies and Bob Mould. They sound great, but tension seems high between these guys and it's a bit hard to tell when they are just "busting" on each other or seriously getting mad at each other.

At any rate, it's all about the music and they sound great. Keep an eye out for this band's upcoming cd. That's right, they're still together, with some newer members, and they still play the Philly/South Jersey area. Currently they're scheduled to play an upcoming show at New Hope's John & Peters.

Track list for this broadcast is:

1.If I Knew Then What I Know Now

2. Garden Wall

3. Puff the Magic Dragon

4. In My Hands

5. Schizophrenia

6. Global Ocean

7. Superman

8. Harder They Fall

9. Death Song

10. Apple to a Kiss

11. What Was I Thinking Of ?

Napalm Sunday, a great powerpop band from the Philly area, took I-95north up to the TSC campus to play on the night of May 10, 1990. It was a rainy night and they made sure I knew they drove and did not travel by way of "hydroplane".I asked the band to play on my show because I really liked the demo, but as I listened to the tape, for the first time in nearly 16 years, I remembered just how funny these guys were. I mean it is a great interview. However, after listening to the tape a second time I realized that it may not be all that funny to people that are out of the loop. By "loop" I mean the Philly music scene (circa 1990), so I've included a mini-glossary to help some of you enjoy the spoken portion of the podcast.

By the way, if you live in the Philly area, don’t miss Napalm Sunday’s reunion show at the Grape Street in Manayunk on January 12th. They’ll be going on early (around 8:15) and playing with Buzz Zeemer who are also reuniting that night. Buzz Zeemer contains all original members of Flight of Mavis, but with Philly legend Tommy Conwell added as a second guitarist.

It’s confusing I know. The bottom line is it’s a must see!

Podcast playlist:

  1. In My Yard

  2. Where You Are

  3. Take Me Home, Country Roads (John Denver cover)

  4. Whisper Loudly

  5. Lost in the Cracks

  6. unknown title    “..our heavy metal songâ€?

Mini-Glossary for Napalm Sunday interview

  1. Record Cellar - a late great Philly Record Store that, at the time this show was recorded, had recently started a record label. The label continued for years and sadly released its last cd this past December; an awesome 3-disc retrospective of the label titled Town & Country
  2. Flight of Mavis - another great Philly powerpop band that had recently been signed to Record Cellar records; its first act.
  3. Electric Love Muffin - a legendary Philly band that had recently broken up.
  4. Brian – bassplayer for The Electric Love Muffin
  5. The Conrads - a band I played bass for at that time. (You kinda need to know this because at times they decide to interview me)
  6. Les Nesman - a fictional, clueless, Midwestern news reporter on the CBS sitcom, WKRP in Cincinnati
  7. Platoon – Academy Award winning film about the Vietnam conflict
  8. Soul Train & Don Cornelius - a nationally syndicated African-American dance show and its host.

FYI: Napalm Sunday was eventually signed to Record Cellar Records.

  12/15/88

On the evening of December 15, 1988 Philly legend Kenn Kweder made the trek up to Trenton, New Jersey, most likely via I-95, to chat with me and play a few songs on the show.

He discussed many things, including, but not limited to, a leap from the top of a moving bus, sadistic ex-girlfriends, and a very expensive and extravagent Elvis Presley tribute/parody show that was coming up in several weeks. (BTW, a video documentary of Kenn's Elvis show has been posted to Youtube!)

Oh, and I can't forget the music! Kenn gives a great acoustic performance of some of his best songs; including Torn Rice, Girl with the Dylan Flowers, Remember Me and many others.

Enjoy!

Another great band from North Jersey, the Gripweeds are heavily influenced by 60's pop and psychadelica. This band worked very hard on harmonies and the proof is in the performance. The vocals are just amazing, except , of course, for when they convince me to sing along on I Got You, Babe. Ouch!...Sorry guys.

Enjoy!

1. It Won't Be Wrong

2. Your Love

3. Headed For a Fall

4. So Sad About Us

5. I Got You, Babe

This was a very interesting night. In fact the whole show came together in a strange way. I was upstairs at Trenton's City Gardens and I noticed something wedged up in the drop ceiling over in the corner. I went over to investigate and found it was a 7" Fiendz single for the song Runaway with Me and a flier announcing some of their upcoming shows. I went home put it on the turntable and absolutely loved it.

Well I just had to have them play on the show. They agreed and the rest is on this podcast. Well, that's just part of the story. When they arrived that night they discovered, after travelling over 70 miles from Totowa, New Jersey, that they had forgotten a guitar chord. I announced that the broadcast may need to be cancelled unless someone out there in radioland could bring down a chord for the band. Well, within a few minutes someone arrived with the most needed chord. I actually thank him, by name, on the air between two of the songs in the set.

A special thanks also have to go out to Scott Lowe for engineering this complicated stereo performance.

Here it is.....The Fiendz on The Spaghetti in a Box Show!
